WHAT IS DEPRESSION?

Depression is a serious mood disorder that significantly impacts how you think, feel, and act. Unlike occasional sadness or grief that everyone experiences, depression is a chronic condition that causes persistent feelings of intense sadness, worthlessness, and hopelessness.

Symptoms of Depression

If you have depression, you may experience a variety of symptoms with differing levels of severity, including:

  • Sadness or Hopelessness: Persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness.
  • Feelings of Worthlessness or Guilt: Excessive or inappropriate feelings of guilt or worthlessness.
  • Loss of Interest: A diminished interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed.
  • Changes in Appetite: Significant weight loss or gain due to changes in appetite.
  • Changes in Sleep Habits: Insomnia or excessive sleeping.
  • Fatigue: Persistent tiredness and lack of energy.
  • Poor Concentration and Decision-Making Skills: Difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or remembering things.
  • Thoughts of Death or Suicide: Recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal ideation, or suicide attempts.

A clinical depression diagnosis typically requires experiencing these symptoms most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks.

WHAT CAUSES DEPRESSION?

Depression is often linked to chemical imbalances in the brain. Neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, dopamine, and glutamate, play crucial roles in regulating mood. When the levels of these chemicals are insufficient or their functioning is impaired, depression can develop.

Several factors can increase the risk of depression, including:

  • Genetics: A family history of depression can elevate your risk.
  • Environmental Factors: Exposure to stressors such as abuse, neglect, violence, or poverty can contribute to the development of depression.

HOW IS DEPRESSION TREATED?

At NoCo MedSpa & IV Therapy, we offer an innovative approach to treating depression through ketamine infusion therapy.

Ketamine Infusion Therapy

Traditional antidepressants primarily work by increasing the production of serotonin, which eventually boosts glutamate activity. However, ketamine works differently by directly stimulating glutamate activity, leading to quicker and more effective results.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING KETAMINE IV THERAPY

Our Anesthesiologist/Anesthetist team starts with a series of six hour-long low-dose ketamine infusions, typically administered at 0.5mg/kg/hr. These sessions are scheduled once or twice a week and consist of:

  • 40-Minute Infusion: During this time, you may experience a floating sensation or mild side effects, such as visual hallucinations, which subside shortly after the infusion.
  • 20 Minutes of Recovery: Post-infusion recovery under careful monitoring.

An experienced Anesthesiologist or Anesthetist supervises the process to ensure safety and effectiveness. After the initial series, maintenance treatments are usually recommended every 3-5 weeks for sustained symptom relief. Over time, the interval between appointments may be extended based on your progress.
